Frequently Asked questions

  • Better Fight is a grant making nonprofit that supports gyms and professional martial artists in their ambitions to offer additional social services to their communities. What does that look like? Maybe it’s a financial scholarship for a JiuJitsu black belt who wants to go back to school and get a degree in social work. Or maybe it’s the owner of a boxing gym who wants to start an academic tutoring program for high school students. Better Fight works in partnership with these leaders, providing them with money, expertise, and a professional network as they go about accomplishing their goals.

  • Any martial arts instructor or gym owner living and working in the United States. They do not need to be a citizen.

  • The team behind Better Fight is most familiar with and passionate about the disciplines which are blended into Mixed Martial Arts (boxing, Muay Thai, JiuJitsu, wrestling). However, applicants in other disciplines are encouraged to apply, and will be considered on their own merits.

  • Better Fight is a brand new venture, launched for the first time in 2022. There is no real precedent for it, which is to say that we will consider any and all proposals. We want to hear from martial artists about what they see in their communities, about what is lacking and what a gym can provide.

  • We are not interested in providing general purpose funding for gyms. We will not consider proposals to help new gyms open or pay the rent of existing gyms that are struggling. We are only interested in funding social programs that compliment the training already being done in gyms that otherwise are financially secure.

  • Not at all; the application is the same for both.

  • Nope. Once you are awarded the grant, the money is yours to spend on the program of your design. We will ask for some proof that you are doing the work, but we are not micromanagers. Of course, we hope you will stay in contact with us and the other grantees. The ultimate goal of Better Fight is to create a national network of gyms that are united in their ambitions to create social change through martial arts.
